Wait a minute, Heavy D is doing Reggae, WOW!!!

My boyfriend told me that he saw this video on MTV tonight. I didn't believe him. Actually I still can't believe it even though I just saw it for myself. I just wasn't quite ready for this one. But the song is hot, I guess. Hmmmm......... I knew he was planning a comeback, I just didn't know he was reinventing himself into a Reggae Star!

Cadillac Records is a Must See!

My family and I went to see Cadillac Records this weekend. I was presently surprised by this film. Honestly from all the advertisements, I figured the entire movie would be based on Beyonce and her role as Etta James. Now don't get me wrong I am a B fan too, but I was hoping the movie was not centered around just one megastar who in my opinion is becoming a tad bit overexposed. Anyway if you are not too upset with my Beyonce comment, and would like to read on, I would love to share my thoughts on this outstanding movie!

Cadillac Records told the story of Chess Records, the company that introduced the world to Blues great Muddy Waters (Jeffery Wright). Now I have always heard of Muddy Waters but regretfully I never knew his story and how significant he was to Black music history. Muddy Waters, known for his voice along with his guitar skills, opened the door for other Blues singers and musicians such as Little Walter (Columbus Short) and Howlin' Wolf (Eamonn Walker). Like Muddy, I knew very little about these two stars as well. As Chess Records made these Blues greats famous, owner Leonard Chess (Adrien Brody) also launched the careers of Rock & Roll great Chuck Berry (Mos Def) and singer Etta James (Beyonce Knowles). The movie highlighted the history behind each of these artists and the incredible barriers they broke for so called "Race Music" during the 1950s and 60s.

In my opinion, the storyline was laid out very well and the actors used for each role were amazing. I would particularly like to say that Columbus Short and Mos Def really did their thing. I mean Columbus is still early in his career, which is obviously going to take off from here. And Mos Def, most defiantly, became Chuck Berry in the flesh!

As for weekend box office results the film did not do so badly. It took in an estimated $3.5M from only 686 play dates. The R-rated film averaged a good $5,102 representing the second highest average in the top ten. Now Cadillac Records was produced for $12M, so let's hope in the next few weeks we all go out and support this one!

Jim Martin Defeated, But Yes, We Still Can!!!!

Ok so I was very disappointed to see Jim Martin loose in the runoff election race for Georgia Senate last night. I hate to know that Georgia is such a republican state, I mean even in the Presidential race McCain won Georgia. It just seems impossible to me in this day and age that republicans still run this state. But I can only speak from my background and the neighborhood I grew up in and vote, where I know democrats (white and black) exists in record numbers. But in areas outside of Decatur, Lithonia, College Park, and South Fulton I guess republicans are alive and extremely active.

This angers me, but more importantly pushes me to become more active in the Democratic Party. Saxby Chambliss has already said he opposes President Elect Barack Obama's plans and will work hard to push his good ol' boy republican views. As democrats we need to continue to take a stand in Georgia even though we have been defeated! I hope that the majority of our party does not feel like their vote does not count! Please continue to live by our new creed, "Yes We Can", trust me we can still turn this state around!

Almost Boyfriend Christmas Gift Guide Quiz

Ok ladies, it’s that time of year to decide what type of Christmas gift to get (or not get) your friend/boo/homeboi who you’ve been talking to/dating/sleeping with. But what is the appropriate gift for someone who is not quite your boyfriend but much more than a friend?

Take my quiz and find out if that sweater/iPhone/pat on the head is too much to spend ;-)

1. How long have you been dating?

Please Note: If you are not “dating” you should not take this quiz. Come on Ladies, we have to be realistic about our situations.

a. 1 week (0 points)
b. 1 month (1 point)
c. 2 months (2 points)
d. 3 months (3 points)

Please Note: If you have been dating longer than three months, than he’s PROBABLY never going to be your boyfriend. ...And don’t turn your face up like that, I’m speaking from experience.

2. How often do you date?

a. 2-3 times a week (3 points)
b. Once a week (2 points)
c. Once every 2-3 weeks (1 point)
d. You can't remember the last time you saw him. (0 points)

Please Note: If you can’t remember the last time you saw him, then you are not dating.

3. How often do you speak to him?

a. Everyday (3 points)
b. A few times a week. (2 points)
c. At least once a week. (1 point)
d. Whenever I call him. (0 points)

Please Note: If you only make calls and never receive them then you are not dating you are stalking…

4. Are you having sex with him?

a. No. (2 points)
b. Yes, but only once. (2 points)
c. Yes. (2 points)
d. Yes, whenever he wants. (0 points)

Please Note. Just because you are sleeping with someone does not mean you’re dating. Don’t be a jumpoff!!! And “whenever he wants”….uh NO, you have needs too!!!

5. How much does he spend (on average) on dates?

a. Half, we go dutch. (2 points)
b. $20 - $44 (2 points)
c. $50 - $75 (3 points)
d. Nothing, I pay. (0 points)

If you selected “nothing, I pay”, STOP - RED FLAG – TURN AROUND, AND START AGAIN!!! I am very much a modern woman HOWEVER I think it is very important for a man to pay in the beginning stages of dating.

Please Note: I am not promoting gold diggerism but if your friend/boo/homeboi is always paying for your outings, a small token of your appreciation is always a nice touch to an impending relationship.

The Score Card

Score: 11 – 14
Gift Price Range: $75 - $100
Gift Example: Sporting Event Tickets (not courtside) or Electronic Accessories (not an iPod but maybe an iPod docking station)

Score: 7 – 10
Gift Price Range: $50 - $74
Prefect Gift: Cologne or Article of Clothing

Score: 4 - 6
Gift Price Range: $30 - $49
Prefect Gift: Dinner (yes, you pay)

Score: 0 - 3
Perfect Gift: A Door (to walk out of)
Are you serious? Do you really think this guys is worthy of a Christmas present? On second thought, maybe he is…having game like that must be worth something.

I mean I can never take him too serious as a singer, but his songs are always hits. Can't wait to hear the new album. This was a great single to start with! Also I'm sure you noticed them copying Micheal Jackson at the very end of the video. That came from Speed Demon which was a video on Moonwalker. Just a taste of Kanye's New Album!

(Kanye West) Tell Everybody That You Know (feat. Lil Wayne) from Kevin on Vimeo.

So Mr. West's new album, 808s and Heartbreaks, is simply amazing! I have to be honest and say I'm not even ready to write a full review of the album yet, I'm still in shock by some of the songs. He dug really deep for this one. We all know his situation right now (the passing of his mother and his broken engagement). Well he used all the hurt that he has acquired in the last year to create one of the most touching and heartfelt albums I've ever listened too. I must admit though, I was a little worried at first when I heard that he used the autotone voice on every track and did not rap this time. But man was I in for a pleasant surprise. Enjoy listening to See You In My Nightmares (feat. Lil Wayne). This record makes me want to find that dude that hurt me back then and let him know one more time, I'M SOOOO OVER YOU! LOL, sorry I got a little emotional for a sec! Anyway enjoy and stay tuned for my full album review.

Long Hair Don’t Care…Anymore!

Those of you who know me outside of the blogsphere know that I have always prided myself on my past my shoulders-thick-you might think I’m mixed with something else hair. But after several do-it-yourself color jobs, my hair (my love) began to break off and thin. I immediately ran out and bought Dr. Miracle’s cream, DoGro’s grease, and even began taking prenatal vitamins to restore me to my previous hair glory. And after a few positive comments from my mother and Jennice, I thought I was on my way. Until…

I was on a date with a new friend. We were joking around and he carelessly pushed my hair out of my face and ran his fingers through. As a girl with formerly long hair, I knew the “check to see if she has a weave” trick well. So I lightheartedly said, “No it’s not a weave.” And he said, “Of course not, it’s too short to be a weave.” I felt like a dagger had gone straight though my heart! I thought, SHORT HAIR?!?! That’s not me! I’ve never been the girl with short hair! But I masked my pain by laughing off his comment and changing the subject.

The next day, I began feverishly brainstorming new ways to get long hair…even if it wasn’t my own. I Googled local salons to find a good and cheap sew-in. I decided that might be an expensive habit to maintain. Then a light bulb went on and I remembered my mother used to braid in a couple of tracks for me in high school. I searched You Tube for weave instructional videos and emailed them to my mother because the two tracks that were cool in high school would not fly in the Big Apple. My whole head needed to be weaved out!

Of course my mother delivered and now I had several new inches of hair to swang (my Sorors know that I’m talking about). To increase my look, I added spirals because the next time I saw my new friend I wanted to wow him…but he didn’t even know it was a weave, go figure!

I was instantly ashamed of myself. I always knew my hair was a big part of my image but was it the only part? Within my life I have had several positive hair role models. My Aunt Cora with her short curly afro, my Aunt Ali and Kai who change their color, cut, and texture like the days of the week, and Jennice all natural all the time. But on the other hand, my father has always loved my long hair and would become annoyed with any talk of altering it. Did my new friend’s comment pinch a nerve…because another man in my life expressed his love of long hair…probably but the shit stops here!

So now I write this blog to you sitting in a Dominican hair salon getting a wash and set…with my own hair. Weave might be cool for some but I’ve decided to rock my own for a while short, breaking off, and all.

Thanks for listening - Apples

T-Pain Singing??

Anyone see T-Pain and Luda perform on SNL last night?? Well this was the first time I've ever heard T-Pain sing without his voice being synthesized, and um lets just say I was not overly impressed!! Call me a hater, but I always knew T-Pain needed those special effects! I will say he can hold a note and it was actually kind of cute to actually see him really singing. But if I close my eyes, he sounds like a little kid (remember Little Sammie LMAO). Anyway sorry to upset all you T-Pain fans. Breaking News that touched my heart!

A few months ago I became aware of this family's story on the news. I was touched by the community outreach that resulted from the story. A family with nothing ended up with a Suburban and a new house in a "good" neighborhood. But last night, this new story really has me thinking. Watch first......

Now here are my thoughts. I hate to point fingers or follow stereotypes, but come on. We all know that most impoverished children (children in large families on welfare, children from broken homes, etc.) are not adequately cared for by their parents. It doesn't take money to raise a child to be mannerly, or to teach a child, or even to love a child. It takes time, effort, and true care. I don't know the ends and outs of this story but I can't help to think that this family was given a little lead way to step in the right direction, and the parents still did not properly care for their children.

I can also assume that if the two parents started out with nothing, then they probably work very hard, i.e. long hours, to keep up with their new lifestyle. This may result in these children spending too much time unattended and running wild. I hate to feel this way, but we all know how it goes. I also hate to agree with the white neighbor who says, "It makes me think they would have been better off going to DEFACS." I am praying for the little girl and I hope she returns from the hospital with minor head injuries. Shame on it all!

Where else is there to go, once you've made it to the top?

Just when I thought I'd heard it all from power couple B and Jay-Z, today its been announced that they have reached the top of Forbes's power couple list for earnings this year. Yes they beat out our favorite couple, Will and Jada, who got second place with $85 million earned combined. Oh yeah and they beat out the most likely richest couple, David and Victoria Beckham, who only made top three with $58 million combined. So how much dough did Sasha and Jigga pull in this year, drum roll please.........$162 million combined in 2008 alone!!!!!

Damn that's a lot of cheese! My question is who made the bulk of it, B or J? I've got my bet on B. You like how I keep her name first, don't you! I think J may have been making more than her before but, in 2008, she might have him beaten him! Let's see the new album, House of Dereon and Dereon, L'Oreal, Tommy Hilfiger True Star and True Star Gold, Emporio Armani, and the list goes on.....Yeah she definitely brings home the bacon.

I'm happy to see black couples doing so well. I mean come on its been great in 08'! Our new First Family is Black and now Beyonce and Jay-Z are on the top of Forbes's list with Will and Jada right behind. Who would have thought!

Finally: Kanye West official "Heartless" Video

Heartless from kwest on Vimeo.

So I know I'm not the only one that has been anxiously waiting for Ye to do a video for this song. When I first heard it on the radio I literally had to stop driving to pay attention to the lyrics (OK just between us I stop driving for a lot of new music, this wasn't the first time!!!!). The song is Official. I love his heartfelt lyrics that are so bittersweet yet make so much sense. How could she be so heartless?? Poor Mr. West. I couldn't imagine how he would do this video but I'm so glad he actually made a video that directly related to the song. You know sometimes he can go off on the deep end! And I applaud genius director Hype Williams. Job well done. Enjoy the video!

"YES WE DID", and for now on "WE CAN"!!!!!!!

So first let me, Peaches, apologize for my absence lately. My life has been going through a lot of changes and I needed to take time to mentally prepare myself for the future. But with the help of our new President, Barack Obama, at 11pm on Nov. 4, 2008, I gained new faith in myself, my people, and my country.

I shared the moment at home with my mother who was born in 1944 (ironically she witnessed an African American elected the 44th President of the United States) and my 87 year old grandmother. I can only imagine the emotions that were running through those two as I know they have both witnessed racial discrimination, they have both fought in the Civil Rights Movement, and they have both prayed for a better America for their children and grandchildren. It is a night that I will always remember and hold dear to my heart as I continue my journey through life.

I'm sure we all have some great memories from Nov. 4th. Please share on our blog if you'd like. I do not regret that I was not out and about partying that night, mainly because I know I will be partying this weekend all the way until January for the inauguration. I'm thinking of going to the All Black Affair at the Velvet Room Tonight. So if anyone else is going out to celebrate our newest hero of the revolution, maybe I'll run into you. Have fun and be safe!

Praying for America!

So I posted my prayer for Jennifer Hudson yesterday before officials identified her nephews body........I realize that there is a lot of evil going on in the world today, when we have so many positive things to be looking forward to. I am really hurt by this horrible ordeal that Jennifer and her family are going through. I hope that the person or persons who did this are found and brought to justice.

As for these dumb ass skin heads that we learned about yesterday, I have a few words........As the time is coming very close for America to gain our first Black President, haters are going to do everything in their power to deter honest and hardworking Americans who believe in change from voting for Obama. They will try to put fear in our hearts. Beware of these haters but do not allow yourself to be persuaded by them. Do not live in fear! And as always, continue to pray for Obama, his family, and our country! Prayer changes things!
Sincerely~ Peaches

The Secret Life of Bees gets an A+ from Peaches

So I went to see The Secret Life of Bees last night, it was amazing! With an all-star cast of Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo I already had high expectations for the movie. But apparently I had no idea of the incredible strength each these women possessed. It was the kind of convincing strength that made my heart cry every time they cried on screen, not too many actors or movies for that matter have this type of affect on me.

Without previous knowledge of the book, unfortunately I have not yet read it, I fell in love with story. It's full of drama, a little mystery, and a lot of love.

The story is set in the South in 1964, a hard yet progressive time for Black people.  In the story Lilly (Dakota Fanning), a 14 year-old white girl runs away from home escaping the cruelty of her father with her Black nanny Rosealeen (Jennifer Hudson). The two run off in search of a mysterious place where Lilly has a feeling her deceased mother may have lived many years ago.

Lilly and Rosaleen reach their destination, the Boatwright farm, a honeybee farm owned and operated by three educated and entrepreneurial Black sisters August (Queen Latifah), June (Alicia  Keys), and May Sophie Okonedo. The sisters take Lilly and Rosaleen in and allow the two to live and work with them on the farm. Throughout the story Lilly learns more about her deceased mother and why the Boatwright farm was such a  mystery.

Containing several historical references to the Civil Rights Act, The Secret Life of Bees, really hit home for me. With the history we are making today and record numbers of Black people registering to vote, I was once again inspired and excited about the possibility of Obama being our first black President.

Director and writer Gina Prince-Bythewood and Executive Producer Jada Pinkett-Smith along with Producer Will Smith get two thumbs up for this film. I urge you to support this one. Don't wait for the bootleg, just give up ten dollars and contribute to the box office for The Secret Life of Bees. I promise you won't regret it. And after you see the movie join me in reading the novel by Sue Monk Kidd. Enjoy!

Unlikely Newspapers Endorse Obama

I came across this article from the AP, and of course the journalist in me was too excited! Had to share with you all.

Stay Tuned Cause We're Juicy~ Peaches

WASHINGTON (Oct. 17) - Democrat Barack Obama on Friday won endorsements from two unlikely newspapers -- the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

While the Tribune is the largest daily in Obama's hometown, the publication hasn't backed a Democrat in its 161-year history. And the Times hasn't endorsed a presidential candidate since 1972, when it backed President Richard M. Nixon's re-election. This is also the first time it's endorsing a Democrat for president.

In an editorial posted on its Web site, The Tribune said the country needs a president who can lead it through a "perilous time" and restore "a common sense of national purpose." Obama is the best candidate to do that, the editorial board said.

"We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions," the Tribune said. "He is ready."
The Tribune said it liked Republican presidential nominee John McCain, but added that it's "hard to figure John McCain these days."

The Times, the country's fourth-largest newspaper, said McCain's campaign had left the candidate "nearly unrecognizable." His selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for running mate was "irresponsible," it said.

"Palin is the most unqualified vice presidential nominee of a major party in living memory," the Times said. "The decision calls into question just what kind of thinking — if that's the appropriate word — would drive the White House in a McCain presidency."

The Times said the U.S. needs a president who displays grace under pressure, is not prone to volatile gestures and understands the legal foundations of American freedom.

"Obama is educated and eloquent, sober and exciting, steady and mature. He represents the nation as it is, and as it aspires to be," the Times said.

We're Busting Windows

With September 2008 bringing an explosion of highly anticipated albums from some of the biggest Hip Hop and R&B artist: The Game, Ne-yo, T.I., Jennifer Hudson, Robin Thicke, Raphael Saadiq, and the list goes on, I must bow down and give much praise and accolades to a new artist in the game who debuted with her album Fearless this September as well. Jazmine Sullivan mixes her strong vocal chords and witty charm to create a sultry sound of music for all to endure.

We were first introduced to her voice with this summers’ hit love cry, “I Need You Bad”. Great song Jazmine, I love hearing it on my ringtone whenever my man calls. “I Need You Bad” seems like it came straight from the heart and is easily relatable. We love music that we can feel and apply to our everyday lives. We love songs with words that we can see ourselves saying. We love when we can visualize our own situations as parallel to the artists’ situation in the song, and we can imagine taking that exact same actions as the artist does. With all that said, and giving praise to Miss Jazmine……… Can we see ourselves busting windows out of cars??????

Jazmine’s second single “Bust Your Windows” has been flooding the airwaves for the last few weeks. Haven’t heard it?? Take a second and watch the video real quick. Yeah the song is a bit out there, wouldn’t you say?? Or is the song just so real we can’t stand it. I mean obviously this dude did something dead wrong to poor Jazmine, and she had no choice but to retaliate in the most disturbed way.

Question: Why do men drive women to take such harsh actions?? I mean as a female, I know firsthand the extraordinary ability I have to love hard. I know how it is to give a man my all just to have it thrown back in my face because they decided to lie, cheat, or be selfish. It is the worst feeling in the world. And I also know firsthand how it is to try and take matters into my own hands and retaliate.

I’ve never busted widows, but I can recall egging an ex’s car once after I caught him cheating. I can also recall getting close enough to almost completely running over another ex with my car when I saw him kissing another girl in a parking lot. And although I did these things in my past when I was a few years younger, and a tad bit immature (I was like a freshman and sophomore in college), to this day I can still look at my actions as heartfelt and completely justifiable. Love pushed me to that point!!

Jazmine, I feel you girl. I’m not condoning busting car windows (well maybe I am), but I gotta give her much props for this record. I know I’m not the only chic out there who has taken similar actions as Jazmine and I, so I’m curious to hear how many windows you’ve busted. And if you are a male, please share any stories of your car getting abused and exactly what you did to deserve it!

Oh yeah and while you were watching the video, weren’t you anxiously waiting for a car to be vandalized? What happened Jazmine?? It’s OK keep your video classy, we all know from our memory exactly what the picture looks like!

When you cast your vote for who will run our country, never forget your history and keep this bill of sale in mind. When we allow ourselves to forget our not so distant past, then we are destined to repeat these actions in our future. Stand for those who came before us and those who could not stand up for themselves. VOTE!

I encourage you to share this with everyone you know.

Forget the issues…lets talk about energy!

Ok, ok, I know I’m new to this political game but I thought the whole point of a debate was to answer the questions that are asked…..

Ok, I just saying….YES WE CAN – Obama/Biden 08’

Something New (no not really)

Sometimes I feel like I’m in my own version of Groundhog Day because I keep having the same conversation with all of my male friends. Let me clarify, all of my college educated African American male friends. And what conversation you may ask….interracial dating. Now before we get started into this “hot topic” let me just say I am not a racist….

HOWEVER I do believe that America was and still is a racist country and we [African Americans] would be fools if we didn’t realize that we must do more to protect our future and remember our past.

Now back to the conversation, almost all of my friends have no preference on what race their future wives will be. And this “love has no color” revelation comes after either attending a predominantly white college or entering the workforce because before these incidents they were all about their black queens. They state that the African American ladies who attend their school don’t take pride in their appearance. Or they work in an all white office, so why not? Well, there were plenty of black men on my college campus who I wouldn’t have given a second look and I’m ALWAYS the only black girl in the office, but not once have I ever thought about spending my life with anyone who didn’t look like me…as do most of my female African American friends.

I guess my hurt and sometimes anger comes from the lack of loyalty frequently coming out of the male African American community. It is a common tale that when a black man “makes it”, he needs a white (or other) woman to complete it. Or what’s even worst is they want a white (or other) woman with African features (big butt, big lips..oh I’m sorry pouty lips) as their better half. My blood pressure rises just a little everytime an entertainment news show comments on Kim Kardashian’s ASSets or Angelina Jolie’s mouthpiece. HELLO…NEWSFLASH that shit ain’t new we’ve had (without surgical help) those things for years.

It seems that most black women were raised to stand by their black man (no matter what) so it stings when we are so easily cast aside for something new and seemingly different. I'm not saying that you can't fall in love with someone outside of your race or background but why purposely look outside of your race or background? This is a form of self-hate. How can a person be good enough to raise you but not enough to marry you?

I’m sure this blog entry will cause a wide array of comments so let yourself be heard.

Cutting Back!

OK what shall I call this.....What I am about to say is either a sign of today’s failing economy or simply a sign of my butt wising up about wasting money. With gas at $4 a gallon and damn near impossible to get in GA this week, with the price of produce sky rocketing, and with the small amount of 401K I've accumulated in my short years of working quickly diminishing......I, Kai Osiapem, did the unthinkable today. I just came home from work, took out my manicure supplies and cut off my acrylic nails. Yes, me, the girl who must get her nails and toes done every two weeks!!!! This may not sound like a big thing to you but for anyone who truly knows me, going to the nail shop is just about the only personal pampering I require twice a month. It’s been my thing since high school. I will venture to make a rough estimate and say from 2001 until today, I have consistently spent $60 a month on my nails. And that is a cheap estimation because minus the fill-ins and pedicures, I also go get a color change from time to time.

But somehow today I had a change of heart. Yes I am broke, but that is nothing new- I'm often broke but I still get my nails done. So being broke had nothing to do with the major cut back I endured today. I realize that the money I have been paying to my sweet Vietnamese friends at US Nails on Covington Hwy. is a total and complete waste. Yes my nails look nice but come on I can do them myself. Of course I won't be applying acrylic, but I can file and buff and paint my own nails. I can even do the unthinkable and spend $20 at Wal-Mart for one of those home pedicure spas. I mean I won't get the relaxing 2 minute foot and leg massage anymore from Kim, but I can buy the sea scrub she charges me $3 extra for at Wal-Mart too!

Hmmm, an extra $60 a month will do my pockets well these days. I could add $30 to my savings and $30 to fill up my tank every month. Or even better I could put all $60 towards my $100 t-mobile bill every month. I can even donate some money to charity. I can find one of the thousands of people that got laid off from their corporate company this week, with no warning, and give them $60 to buy gas so they can go out and find a blue collar job- how’s that for charity Mr. President.

There is so much I can do with an extra $60 a month. So bye-bye perfect acrylic nails, see you again in maybe 2 years--- that's how long it’s going to take Obama to replenish the wealth back into my poor and abused countries’ economy. Yes I'm already speaking the truth into existence!
Yes We Can!!!!

Year of MJ, I mean the Gentleman

The King of Pop, none other than Michael Jackson, has influenced artist from every genre of music known to man. They cop his dance moves, his timeless fashion, and of course the way he sounds. It does not matter to a true MJ fan how crazy society may perceive the legendary star; they will forever respect Michael Jackson the artist. Ok enough about the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s icon, and on to one of today’s biggest R&B stars inspired by MJ, who just dropped his third album, and is writing for everyone who is hot- Ne-yo.

“Because of you”, was the first Michael Jackson inspired Ne-yo hit, at least that is what I believe. The beat of the song, the melody, purely the way Ne-yo sounds, it all reminded me of a mid 80’s Michael song that I may have heard my older sister jamming to on a Saturday morning. Think about it; watch the video- even his dance moves are reminiscent of white socks, tight pants, and flashy silver thumbs snapping ever so slightly.

It’s a big difference in simply copying someone’s style, and truly allowing a great to influence your style. Ne-yo masters this keen ability to completely be himself and simply reminds us of the King of Pop at the same time. So we move on from “Because of You”, to slightly over a year later – to an entire album that brings the same feeling of MJ- Year of the Gentleman.
So Ne-yo what brought on this album?? Was it an effortless task to compile these songs, did you just pull pages out of your Great Book of words we would all love to get our hands on? Or has your style gradually evolved to a “She’s out of my life” or better yet “The way you make me feel” type of writing?

Let’s start with “Closer”, your 200- 80’s dance hit. Very Ne-yo yet very Michael, that’s all I have to say. From “Closer” he goes to more straight up Ne-yo joints “Mad” another repetitive cry for understanding between man and woman and their petty misunderstandings. And of course “Miss Independent”, an ode to all the millennium boss women- much like the ones he probably runs into from time to time in Atlanta. You know the business woman who has a fly car, swanky loft in Midtown, who rocks Chanel footwear with a simple wife beater and jeans. By the way thanks Ne-yo for giving them their props, and making the not so independent women i.e. me step our game up!

Remember “Do You” from his last album, well get ready for the sequel “Fade into the Background”- now it seems the same woman with the baby girl and fiancĂ© is getting married. Here Ne-yo attends the wedding with the same feelings of just wondering. Again not so much Michael- very Ne-yo. But I must say from the very beginning of “Why Does She Stay” the now 29 year-old lyricist sounds just like Michael. Listen to it and see for yourself.

Great title for your album too, Ne-yo. Of course you have always been very gentleman-like in demeanor, we can’t deny that. Even with your little quarrel with Chris Brown a few months ago. We all you- tubed the underground R&B turned rapper beef between our two melodic stars. Hey Ne-yo seriously, what was that?? But even though you gave us a silly reason to feed off another beef we will always think of you as a lover not a fighter.

Overall the album is another hit. We shall see how the charts feel, but I’m saying job well done. Please allow me sound like Andre 3000 right quick…….Behold a Gentleman!
